Ingredients
- 3/4 Cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 Cup white whole wheat flour
- 1/2 Cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 6 Tablespoons butter (cold and cut into pieces)
- 1/2 Cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 Cup chopped apple
- 1 Cup confectioner's sugar
- 2 Tablespoons milk for glaze
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for glaze
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flours, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt until well mixed.
- Add the cold butter pieces into the dry mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the flour mix.
- Stir gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; it's okay if some lumps remain.
- Fold in the chopped apples until they are evenly distributed through the batter.
- Drop spoonfuls (about 1/4 cup each) of the batter onto the prepared baking sheet. Leave space between each fritter.
- Bake in your preheated oven for 11–13 minutes. They should be golden on the bottom and set in the center.
- While fritters bake, whisk together confectioner's sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl until smooth.
- Once baked, remove fritters from oven and transfer them to a wire rack. Turn on broiler. Brush a thin layer of glaze over each fritter and broil for 2–4 minutes until golden on top.
- After broiling, brush any remaining glaze over warm fritters for extra sweetness.
- Allow glaze to harden slightly before enjoying your delicious Baked Apple Fritters!
