  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup hot coffee
  • 1 and 1/4 cups unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 3 and 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 35 Tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare two 9-inch cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. In one bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and buttermilk until smooth. Gradually add in the hot coffee.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients until just mixed; do not overmix.
  5. Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for 23–26 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let cakes cool completely before frosting with chocolate buttercream.
