Ingredients
- 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 and 3/4 cups granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup hot coffee
- 1 and 1/4 cups unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- 3 and 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3–5 Tablespoons heavy cream
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare two 9-inch cake pans with parchment paper.
- In one bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, mix eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and buttermilk until smooth. Gradually add in the hot coffee.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients until just mixed; do not overmix.
- Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for 23–26 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool completely before frosting with chocolate buttercream.
