Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red and purple food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla.
  4. Gradually combine wet and dry ingredients until smooth; divide batter between prepared pans.
  5. Bake for 25–30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean; cool in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  6. For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until creamy; gradually add confectioners' sugar until fluffy.
